In Heerenveen (around 230 employees) we produce water-based polymers and formulation additives for the packaging and coatings industry. With a multidisciplinary team (Marketing, Technical Service, Application & Syntheses Lab, Engineering and Production) we are addressing the market demands of the Printing & Packaging industry.

As a Product Development Scientist you will, as part of the Product Development Department, develop new polymer products within our Printing & Packaging team. Your main focus will be on packaging, where you will face challenges with regards to sustainability, food safety and renewable raw materials. Your tasks include:

  • Generating ideas and concepts towards new project opportunities. You will focus on short-term customer opportunities as well as long-term innovation projects.
  • You will be exposed to a variety of end-user markets, where you will apply new or existing technologies for solving our customer’s needs.
  • Developing and introducing new and revised products which meet quality, safety, cost and timing requirements. Furthermore, being a key participant in several project teams. You will manage (sub)projects and topics with moderate to high complexity.
  • You will be the recognized expert in the relevant functional area to product development for Printing & Packaging.
  • Directing the activities of technologists and technicians to assist in the completion of project objectives.
  • Developing and managing key technical contacts and ensuring business and technical knowledge sharing.
  • Developing and continuously improving work processes (test methods, experimental and operating procedures) within the Technical Center with a focus on digitalisation.

Together with 2 colleague Scientists you are leading the projects for Printing & Packaging in the Printing & Packaging Laboratory. This department consists of 12 lab technicians who are responsible for Product Development Support and Technical Service Support. In this role you will report to the Development Manager Europe.

Function requirements
  • You have obtained a PhD degree and are ready to start your career or you have obtained a master's degree with at least 2 years of proven experience within a chemical R&D environment. Preferably in the field of (Polymer) Chemistry, Chemical Technology or comparable.
  • Interest or experience in the physical chemistry of polymers is a big plus. This in order to assist with translating application requirements into polymer structures.
  • You have affinity with sustainability and are capable of translating customer application problems into a sound scientific approach for a solution.
  • As you will be working in a team environment with a variety of disciplines (including Technical Service, Marketing, Application & Syntheses Lab, Engineering and Production) a high level of pro-activity paired with excellent communication skills are essential.
  • Excellent knowledge of English is required. You preferably also speak German.
